Plowright, Joan Ann (1929– )

English stage and screen actor. A leading classical actor of the UK stage, she has also enjoyed a lengthy film career, making her screen debut in Moby Dick (1956). She has worked in both US and UK productions, mixing comic and dramatic roles, including an adaptation of John Osborne's play The Entertainer (1960), Drowning By Numbers (1987), Enchanted April (1991), the romantic drama Dance With Me (1998), and the comedy Bringing Down The House (2003).

She also featured in the films 101 Dalmations (1996), Tea with Mussolini (1999), and Goose! (2004), and in the television series Encore! Encore! (1998). She was married to English actor Laurence Olivier.
