Plowright, Rosalind (1949- )| English soprano. She studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music, where she made her debut in 1968, in J C Bach's Temistocle. She sang Donna Elvira with the Glyndebourne Touring company in 1977. She made her London debut with the English National Opera ensemble in 1979, as Britten's Miss Jessel; she later sang Desdemona, Donizetti's Elisabeth, and Verdi's Elena there. Her US opera debut was made in 1982, in Il Corsaro. Her first major role at Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, was Donna Anna (1983); she returned for Aïda in 1984. She appeared in Paris, Milan, Bern, and Munich as Strauss's Ariadne and Danae, Amelia, Suor Angelica, and Alceste. In 1986 she returned to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, to perform Senta, and the Trovatore Leonora. She spent the 1992/93 season as Elisabeth de Valois for the English National Opera ensemble, and Gioconda for Opera North. |
