    0.04 sec.

Plumer, Hubert Charles Onslow, 1st Viscount (1857–1932)

British major-general in World War I. Plumer spent much of the war on the Western Front around the Ypres area, scene of much heavy fighting. He was responsible for the planning and execution of the attack on Messines 1917, generally considered to be one of the best-organized British operations of the war. KCB 1906, Baron 1919, Viscount 1929.

He was highly popular with his troops (who referred to him as ‘Daddy’) as he planned carefully, organized meticulously, and generally executed his plans at far less cost in lives than any of his contemporaries could have managed. After the Armistice he marched his army to the Rhine as part of the forces of occupation. He was made a field-marshal and created a baron 1919, and was appointed governor of Malta.
