Plympton

Market town in Devon, England, 7 km/4 mi northeast of Plymouth; population (2001) 29,100. Plympton, a ‘stannary’ (tin-mining) town (see stannaries), comprises the parishes of Plympton St Mary and Plympton St Maurice. It has an ancient guildhall, and there are ruins of an old castle.

Plympton St Maurice was the headquarters of Prince Maurice (a Royalist appointed in 1643 to the command of the Cornish army), and the birthplace of the painter Joshua Reynolds. Reynolds was educated at the grammar school, which was founded in 1658.
