Pocahontas| Town in Tazewell County, southwestern Virginia, USA, on the West Virginia border, 8 km/5 mi northwest of Bluefield; population (1990 est) 500. Formerly a coal mining town in the middle of the Pocahontas coalfield, a major source of soft coal, its mining operations ceased in the 1950s, and the workings have become a tourist attraction. The town was established with the arrival of the Norfolk and Western railway in the field in 1882. |
