stencil

In art, a thin plate of metal or other material out of which patterns have been cut for painting through the spaces on to a surface. A regular design can then be applied to the surface to be decorated. Stencils are commonly used on walls, fabric, and paper items.

Completed between 1943 and 1944, the 20 collaged paper cutouts for Jazz were translated into pochoirs (stencils), which were then printed and published in an edition of 270 in 1947.
Publication Matisse reproduced his cut-outs using the pochoir or stencil technique.
