Point Hope

Town in North Slope Borough, northwestern Alaska, USA, on the Lisburne Peninsula and the Chukchi Sea, at the western end of the Brooks Range, 900 km/560 mi northwest of Fairbanks and 480 km/300 mi southwest of Barrow; population (1990) 600. It is principally an Inuit sealing and fishing community.

The Cape Krusenstern National Monument on Cape Krusenstern, 170 km/105 mi to the southeast, is a 267,300-ha/660,000-ac reserve containing the remains of over 100 successive beachfront communities going back about 6,000 years; the area offers significant evidence of early settlement in western Alaska.

Krueger, Western Michigan University, Department of Anthropology, Kalamazoo, MI 49008 The prehistoric coastal communities of Point Hope, Alaska have been considered important Arctic archaeological sites since their initial excavations in 1939.
She interweaves information from the writings of explorers with her own experiences, especially from Peter Freuchen, a wellknown scientist-explorer, and Knud Rasmussen, who in 1910-1933 lived in Greenland, traveled as far west as Point Hope, Alaska and Siberia, and kept some 6,000 pages worth of notes about the Arctic flora and fauna, the culture of the people, the landscape, and the weather and climate.
