Point Pleasant| Borough of Ocean County, eastern New Jersey, USA, on the Jersey shore, between the estuaries of the Manasquan and Metedecon rivers, 16 km/10 mi southeast of Asbury Park; population (1990) 18,200. A seaside resort, its facilities include a boardwalk, amusement centre, and state marina. Point Pleasant is also residential, and has some light industry. The borough of Point Pleasant Beach lies adjacent on the Atlantic to the northeast; population (1990) 5,100. |
Point Pleasant| Village in Monroe township, Clermont County, southwestern Ohio, USA, on the Ohio River, 32 km/21 mi southeast of Cincinnati. It is the birthplace of Ulysses S Grant, Civil War general in chief for the Union and 18th president of the USA (1869–77). A replica of the Grant house is a local attraction, and Grant Memorial State Park lies adjacent to the village. |
Point Pleasant| Seat of Mason County, western West Virginia, USA, just north of the confluence of the Kanawha and Ohio rivers, 8 km/5 mi northeast of Gallipolis, Ohio; population (1990) 5,000. A long-established river port, it is becoming increasingly popular as a resort. The settlement was founded in in the 1770s. On 10 October 1774 it was the site of a victory by Virginian troops led by British colonial adminstrator John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore, (1732–1809) over American Indian Shawnee forces led by Cornstalk. The action, known as Lord Dunmore's War, was supposedly taken to protect his own property, but has been called the ‘first battle of the Revolution’. |
