Pointe-à-Pitre

Largest town, chief port, and commercial capital of the French overseas territory of Guadeloupe, on the southwest coast of the island of Grande-Terre in the West Indies; population (1997) 30,000 (80,000 including outlying districts). It is a banking and financial centre.

In 1843 the town was destroyed by a severe earthquake, but was rapidly rebuilt. In 1928 the town was devastated by a cyclone, which claimed several hundred lives. In 1979 Hurricanes David and Frederick caused substantial damage, and in 1989 Hurricane Hugo caused minor damage.
