Sigma Octantis

Star closest to the south celestial pole (see celestial sphere), in effect the southern equivalent of Polaris, although far less conspicuous. Situated approximately 1° from the south celestial pole in the constellation Octans, Sigma Octantis is about 270 light years away from the Sun.
