Pollitt, Harry (1890-1960)

British politician. A boilermaker by trade, he joined the Independent Labour party in 1909 and the Communist Party of Great Britain on its foundation in 1920. He led the party for many years, being general secretary (1929-39 and 1941-56), and thereafter chairman. He stood unsuccessfully for Parliament on nine occasions. Pollitt was born in Droylsden, Lancashire, England.
