caracara

Long-legged bird of the family Falconidae, order Falconiformes, found in Central and South America. The common caracara, Polyborus plancus, is a powerful flyer and a good walker. It sometimes nests in trees and sometimes on the ground, laying three or four eggs. It feeds on carrion and young animals, which it captures alive. It is the national bird of Mexico.
