knotgrass

Annual plant belonging to the dock family. The bases of the small lance-shaped leaves enclose the slender stems, giving a superficial resemblance to grass. Small pinkish flowers are followed by seeds that are eaten by birds. Knotgrass grows worldwide except in the polar regions. (Polygonum aviculare, family Polygonaceae.)

The creeping grass (Paspalum distichum) of North America is sometimes also called knotgrass.

Following my article a few weeks ago about potentially invasive plants, Mrs Heeley from Newsome has written to me about the all-time Number One Invasive Monster - Fallopia japonica, syn Polygonum cuspidatum, or Japanese Knotweed to give its vernacular title.
Abstract Purpose: Polygonum cuspidatum extract as a traditional Chinese medicine is extracted from the dried rhizome and root of Polygonum cuspidatum Sieb.
In this study we tested the hypothesis that a combination of Polygonum cuspidatum (containing resveratrol) with ascorbic acid/ascorbate and flavonoids works better as an antioxidant than the equivalent amount of either ascorbic acid or resveratrol alone, or their theoretical combination.
