Polypodium

Genus of 75 species of ferns in family Polypodiaceae, chiefly evergreen, and widely distributed throughout the world. The common polypody P. vulgare has fronds up to 40 cm/16 in long; it contains small quantities of ostadin, a substance 3,000 times sweeter than sucrose. P. glycyrrhiza has rhizomes that taste like liquorice, used as food by American Indians.
