bluefish

Voracious spiny-finned bony fish found only off the east coast of North America.

It is blue on top and whitish below, while a large black spot marks the base of its pectoral (side) fins. It is characterized by having two dorsal fins, the first one smaller than the second. The bluefish is ferocious and hunts in shoals feeding on smaller fish.

Classification

The bluefish Pomatomus saltator belongs in the order Perciformes, class Osteichthyes.
