Pompano Beach| City in Broward County, southeast Florida, USA; population (1992) 72,900. It is located 8 mi/13 km north-northeast of Fort Lauderdale, on the Atlantic Ocean. Tourism, fruit processing, and fishing are important to the economy. Pompano Beach ships local winter vegetables, and has a variety of manufactures, including pleasure boats, plastics, and electronic equipment. The town was settled about 1900. |
| Originally on the shore, the city center was moved inland after it was devastated by a hurricane in 1928. Crossed by the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway and by canals lined with one-family homes, Pompano Beach also has 20 parks and a noted harness-racing track. |
