Pompano Beach

City in Broward County, southeast Florida, USA; population (1992) 72,900. It is located 8 mi/13 km north-northeast of Fort Lauderdale, on the Atlantic Ocean. Tourism, fruit processing, and fishing are important to the economy. Pompano Beach ships local winter vegetables, and has a variety of manufactures, including pleasure boats, plastics, and electronic equipment. The town was settled about 1900.

Originally on the shore, the city center was moved inland after it was devastated by a hurricane in 1928. Crossed by the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway and by canals lined with one-family homes, Pompano Beach also has 20 parks and a noted harness-racing track.
