Ponnelle, Jean-Pierre (1932-1988)

French opera designer and producer. He designed the premiere production of Henze's Boulevard Solitude (1952), and König Hirsch (1956). His first opera production was Tristan und Isolde in Düsseldorf (1962); he later produced and designed operas by Mozart in Salzburg and Cologne, and a Monteverdi cycle in Zurich. His Don Pasquale appeared at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, and his La cenerentola at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York. He was noted for his stylish productions and his attention to detail.
