Pontano, Giovanni

Pontano, Giovanni (1429–1503)

Italian humanist and poet. His Latin poetry includes Amorum libri duo and De amore coniugali. He also wrote De Bello Napoletano describing his master Alfonso V's fight to secure the kingdom of Naples.

He was born in Cerreto, Umbria. At the age of 18 he entered the service of Alfonso V, under whom, and his successor, Ferrante I, he occupied high office. Pontano became a key figure in what is called to Neapolitan Academy.
