Pontine Marshes

Former malarial marshes in the Lazio region of Italy, extending for about 45 km/28 mi along the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea between Velletri and Terracina. Roman attempts to drain them were unsuccessful, and it was not until 1926, under Mussolini's administration, that they were brought into cultivation. Products include cereals, fruit, flowers, dairy foods, wine, and sugar beet.

The marshes are crossed by the Appian Way. As early as 312 BC Appius Claudius attempted to drain the marshes, and further efforts were made by Augustus, Trajan, and many of the popes. Since 1926 several new towns, including Latina, have been established on the reclaimed land.
