Poopó, Lake

Lake in the Andes in the Oruro department, Bolivia, situated some 3,686 m/12,093 ft above sea-level. Lake Poopó is the second-largest lake in Bolivia. It normally covers an area of 2,600 sq km/1,003 sq mi, though periodic flooding can greatly swell the lake, while summer droughts see it evaporate completely. The Desaguadero River drains Lake Titicaca, 320 km/199 mi to the north, into Lake Poopó. Its outlet is the River Locahahuira. To the northeast is the town of Poopó.

A large bird reserve is located on Lake Poopó.
