Poot, Marcel (1901–1988)

Belgian composer. He became interested early in film, radio, and jazz music, and in 1935 founded the group known as Les Synthétistes.

He studied at the Brussels Conservatory. In 1930 he won the Rubens Prize and went to Paris to study with Paul Abraham Dukas. On his return he held several teaching posts, including at the Brussels Conservatory, of which he became director in 1949.

Opera and stage

the operas Het Ingebeeld Eiland (1925), Het Vrouwtje van Stavoren (1928), and Moretus (1944); ballets Paris in verlegengheid (1925) and Pygmalion (1951).

Choral and orchestral

oratorios Le Dit du routier and Icaros; six symphonies (1929–78) and other orchestral works.

Other

chamber music and other pieces.
