Pop Idol

Pop Idol

British television talent show. Broadcast by the ITV network from 2001, it showcases auditions for the most promising new pop music star, and enjoys unprecedented high ratings. The winner, chosen from 10,000 competitors, receives a record contract with RCA. The formula has met with similar success in other countries, for example American Idol in the USA.

Some 10,000 contestants audition for four judges, who eventually narrow them down to 50. The judges, whose blunt and sometimes merciless criticism became both notorious and popular, are radio DJ Neil Fox, music producer Pete Waterman, RCA records executive Simon Cowell, and manager Nicki Chapman. Home viewers then vote for two contestants out of ten over a series of five shows, until they select two finalists from the group of ten semi-finalists.
