Gregory XVI (1765–1846)| Pope from 1831. He entered the Camaldolese order, and later was sent to Rome and created cardinal. He suppressed revolution in the Papal States, but his rule was disturbed by French occupation. He was a great patron of learning and spent money lavishly on architecture. He wrote Il Trionfo della Santa Bede (1799). He was born at Belluno. |
