Poplar Bluff

Seat of Butler County, southeastern Missouri, USA, 96 km/60 mi southwest of Cape Girardeau; population (1990) 17,000. It is a tourist centre and a marketing hub for the agriculturally rich areas of southeastern Missouri and northeastern Arkansas, which produce cotton and livestock. Wood and paper products, flour, plastics, electrical equipment, and concrete are manufactured. Educational facilities include the Three Rivers Community College (1966). Poplar Bluff was founded in 1850, and developed as a thriving lumber centre after the completion of the Iron Mountain railway in 1873.

Nearby visitor attractions include Lake Wappapello to the north, on the St Francis River; a section of the Mark Twain National Forest to the north; and Mingo National Wildlife Refuge to the northeast.
