Popper, David (1843-1913)

German-Czech cellist and composer. He studied music at the Prague Conservatory, and the cello under Goltermann at Frankfurt. He made his first concert tour in Germany, in 1863. In 1868 he became first cellist at the Court Opera in Vienna; in 1872 he married Sophie Menter, but the marriage was dissolved, in 1886. In 1896 he became cello professor at the Budapest Conservatory.

Works

four cello concertos, Requiem for three cellos (performed London, 1891), numerous pieces for cello.
