Pordenone

Capital of Pordenone province in Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, northeast Italy, on the Friulian plain, 64 km/40 mi northeast of Venice; population (1991) 49,700. Pordenone is an important centre of Italy's electrical consumer goods industry, which provided the stimulus for its rapid economic growth; other industries include engineering, textiles, ceramics, chemicals, furniture, and foodstuffs. It is also a commercial centre for agricultural produce (wine, cereals, fruit, vegetables).

The town has an old centre (14th–17th centuries), around which modern suburbs have developed. The explorer Odorico Matiussi (1236–1331) was born here.
