ManipurState of northeast India; bordered south and east by Myanmar; area 22,356 sq km/8,632 sq mi; population (2001 est) 2,388,600 (30% are hill tribes such as Nagas and Kukis). The capital is Imphal. The state is mostly wooded and mountainous (mainly over 2,000 m/6,500 ft), with a central valley containing Imphal. Features include Loktak Lake, and the state is the original Indian home of polo. Industries include textiles, cement, and handloom weaving. Agricultural products include rice, grain, fruit, vegetables, and sugar. Languages spoken in the state are Manipuri and English. 70% of the population are Hindu. Manipur is a former princely state administered from the state of Assam until 1947, when it became a Union Territory. It became a state in 1972. Women traders have a significant economic and political role in the state, with a powerful union. |
