Port Alberni

Seaport on the south coast of Vancouver Island, southwestern British Columbia, Canada, at the head of Alberni Inlet, 138 km/86 mi northwest of Victoria; population (1991) 18,400. It is a lumbering centre, producing timber, pulp, paper, and plywood. Mining and salmon fishing contribute to its economy. The port developed with the construction of a sawmill in 1860, and was joined with the town of Alberni to the north in 1967.
