Port Angeles

Port of entry and seat of Clallam County, northwestern Washington, USA, on the Strait of Juan de Fuca, opposite and 32 km/20 mi northeast of Victoria, British Columbia; population (1990) 17,700. It has a fine sheltered harbour with numerous boating facilities. Fishing, lumbering, pulp and paper milling, and food processing are the main industries. As a tourist hub, it is the gateway to Olympic National Park and has a year-round ferry service to Victoria. It is the seat of Peninsula College (1961).

Settled permanently in 1862, Port Angeles was the second city after Washington DC to be planned by the Federal government.
