Port Charlotte

Winter resort in Charlotte County, southwestern Florida, USA, on the northern side of Charlotte Harbor, 53 km/33 mi northwest of Fort Myers; population (1990) 41,500. Developed as a planned community during the 1950s, it is a popular vacation centre with vast stretches of artificial waterway and natural waterfront. Its annual fishing tournament and windsurfing regatta are major attractions.

Port Charlotte was established on land formerly owned by the Vanderbilt family, and was once cattle grazing territory.
