Port Colborne

Port in Niagara Regional Municipality, southern Ontario, Canada, on the northeastern shore of Lake Erie, at the southern end of the Welland Canal, 23 km/14 mi southwest of Niagara Falls; population (1991) 18,800. It is a shipbuilding, repair, and transshipment centre, and a leading manufacturer of refined nickel, iron, cement, and flour. Tourism also contributes to the economy. Settlement dates from 1832 with the local completion of the Welland Canal; a 420 m/1,380 ft-long lock is located in the Port Colborne stretch.
