Port Coquitlam

Town in Greater Vancouver Regional District, southwestern British Columbia, Canada, in the lower Fraser Valley, bordered by the Coquitlam, Pitt, and Fraser rivers, 27 km/17 mi east of Vancouver; population (1991) 36,800. The centre of a market gardening and fruit growing region, it grew after the arrival of the Canadian Pacific railway in the 1880s and has rail repair shops. Industries include boatbuilding, tungsten refining, metalworking, quarrying, and food processing. Port Moody, the western terminus of the railway, lies adjacent.

The district municipality of Coquitlam extends to the north and west; population (1991) 84,000. Largely residential, with warehousing, dairy and poultry farming, quarrying, and other industries, it is undergoing rapid suburban growth.
