Port Glasgow

A ship in dry dock at Port Glasgow, Scotland. Dry docks are used to check and make repairs to a ship's exterior, as well as for building new ships. Glasgow has one of the largest dry docks in Europe.

Town in Inverclyde unitary authority, Scotland, situated on the southern shore of the Firth of Clyde, 30 km/18 mi northwest of Glasgow; population (2001) 16,600. Founded in 1668, it has developed a worldwide reputation for shipbuilding and ship repairs, and has one of the largest dry docks in Europe. Other industries include light engineering and the manufacture of clothing, textiles, outdoor equipment, and temporary structures such as tents.
