Port Hope

Town in Northumberland County, southern Ontario, Canada, on Lake Ontario, at the mouth of the Ganaraska River, 96 km/60 mi northeast of Toronto; population (1991) 11,500. A tourist centre, noted for its angling, it also has diverse light industries. Settled in 1778 as a fur trading community, it developed in the early 19th century as a manufacturing town.
