Port Hueneme

Seaport in Ventura County, southwestern California, USA, on the Santa Barbara Channel of the Pacific Ocean, adjacent to Oxnard and 80 km/50 mi northwest of Los Angeles; population (1990) 20,300. Formerly a major shipping centre for regional fruits and produce, Port Hueneme is now known for its sea angling facilities. It is the site of a naval construction battalion (Seabees) base that played a prominent role in World War II. The original settlement was founded in 1870 as Hueneme.
