Port Jefferson

Village in Brookhaven town, Suffolk County, southeastern New York State, USA, on Long Island Sound, 30 km/19 mi east of Huntington; population (1990) 7,500. A residential village and summer resort, it has an active boating and yachting community. The downtown area has been developed as a tourist attraction. Port Jefferson is the terminus of a ferry from Bridgeport, Connecticut.

The village of Port Jefferson Station lies nearby to the south; population (1990) 7,200.
