Port Jervis

Town in Orange County, southeastern New York State, USA, on the Delaware River at the mouth of the Neversink River, 21 km/13 mi southwest of Middletown; population (1990) 9,100. It is situated near the meeting point of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania states. The town has diverse industries, including the manufacture of glass, sportswear, and cosmetics; summer tourism also contributes to the economy.

Port Jervis was originally the home of an American Indian Delaware (Lenni Lenapes) group, who were joined by Dutch and Huguenot farmers in the late 17th century. American Indians and Tories (British sympathizers in the Revolution) wiped out the European settlement in 1779. The town developed rapidly after the opening of the Delaware and Hudson Canal in 1828 and later became a busy railway centre.
