Port Kembla

Port and industrial complex in Greater Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, about 80 km/50 mi south of Sydney. It is the port for the town of Wollongong and the southern coalfields. The largest iron- and steel-producing plant in Australia is located here. The port handles a trade of 25 million tonnes annually.

The Port Kembla industrial complex includes a steel mill (owned by Broken Hill Proprietary Ltd, a mining multinational) which covers 800 ha/1,977 acres, employs 9,000 people and produces 4.5 million tonnes of steel annually. The grain terminal has 30 storage bins with a capacity of 260,000 tonnes. It also produces 25 km/16 mi of cladding each year and over 600,000 tonnes of superphosphate each year. The Port Kembla Coal Terminal also loads great quantities of coal onto ships bound for Asia, Europe, and North America.

The steel mill is owned by Broken Hill Proprietary Ltd, a mining multinational with interests in steel, copper, energy, and other mineral resources.
