Port Louis

Capital of Mauritius since independence in 1968, on the island's northwest coast; population (2000 est) 144,300. Exports include sugar, textiles, and electronic goods. Industries include chemicals, plastics, fertilizers, printed fabrics, and sugar and food processing. It was founded by the French in 1735 and became, until the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, important as a port-of-call on voyages from Europe to Asia.
