Stanley

Town on eastern Falkland, capital of the Falkland Islands; population (1991) 1,557. After changing its name only once between 1843 and 1982, it was renamed five times in the space of six weeks during the Falklands War April–June 1982.

Village in Derbyshire, central England, 8 km/5 mi northeast of Derby; population (2001) 2,150. It lies in a former coal-mining area.

Stanley

US inventors and manufacturers. Francis Edgar Stanley was a portrait painter and a photographer in Maine who with his twin brother Freelan O Stanley jointly invented the ‘Stanley Steamer’ in 1896, the first steam motorcar in New England. They built 100 cars and later organized the Stanley Motor Carriage Company. They made over 10,000 ‘Steamers’.

They were both born in Kingfield, Maine. They formed the Stanley Dry Plate Company in 1883. They sold the business to Eastman Kodak Company in 1905. Francis was president of the motor car company until the business was sold when he died in a car crash in 1918.

Stanley

City and administrative headquarters of Mountrail County, northwestern North Dakota, 80 km/50 mi west of Minot; population (1990) 1,400. It is a trading centre in a farming (flax, wheat, corn, dairy products) and coalmining area.

The men were given emergency first aid before being flown by Sea King helicopter to the King Edward Memorial hospital in Port Stanley.
On June 11 1982, Lance Corporal Rai - a drummer with the 1st Battalion, 7th Gurkha Rifles - almost lost his life during the final assault on Port Stanley.
Col Davies was badly injured in the Falklands conflict in 1982 and returned to the islands in 2006 to complete the journey to Port Stanley cut short by his injuries.
