Port Townsend

Seat of Jefferson County, northwestern Washington, USA, at the northern tip of the Olympic Peninsula, on Admiralty Inlet at the entrance to Puget Sound, 40 km/25 mi northwest of Everett; population (1990) 7,000. Situated 2 km/1 mi south of Fort Worden State Park and 32 km/20 mi northwest of Fort Flagler State Park, the town is a tourist centre and a gateway to Olympic National Park. It is also a trading, processing, and shipping point for lumber, wood pulp, coal, fish, grain, paper, and dairy foods. Settled in 1851, Port Townsend is one of the state's oldest cities and was a bustling port of entry during the 19th century.

When the town was bypassed by the Union Pacific railway, most of the shipping went to Seattle and Tacoma, causing an economic slump. Military installations and a pulp and paper industry later restored the economy.
