Porta, Giambattista della (c. 1541–1615)

Italian physicist. He helped found the Accademia dei Oziosi and the Academia Secretorum Naturae, where groups of students could discuss scientific ideas. He wrote Magia Naturalis/Natural Magic (1558), which considers magic as techniques for controlling nature, and various works on optics, gardening, and physiognomy.

The Academia Secretorum Naturae was closed by Pope Paul V in 1610 at the instigation of the Inquisition.
