Portage County

County of northeastern Ohio, USA, drained by the Cuyahoga River and a number of lakes; area 1,277 sq km/493 sq mi; population (1990) 142,600. Its seat is Ravenna, and the Ravenna arsenal (a government ammunitions store built in 1939) occupies much of the county's northeastern corner. The area is primarily agricultural, yielding dairy and market garden products, fruit, grain, and livestock. Manufacturing takes place at Garrettsville, Kent, and Ravenna. Coal, sand, and gravel deposits are also exploited.
