Portage la Prairie

Town in southern-central Manitoba, Canada, on the Assiniboine River, 87 km/54 mi west of Winnipeg; population (1991) 13,200. Situated in a rich agricultural area, the town is a rail distribution point for grain and livestock. Local manufactures include dairy items and other processed foods, soft drinks, machinery, concrete products, clothing, electric cables, and glassware. Island Park and Crescent Lake house a wildlife sanctuary. Portage la Prairie hosts Canada's National Strawberry Festival and the Central Manitoba Trade Fair.

The site was used by early French fur traders as a portage (crossing point) between the Assiniboine River and Lake Manitoba. Nearby is Fort La Reine, built in the 1730s by the French-Canadian explorer La Vérendrye as a headquarters.
