Portales

Seat of Roosevelt County, eastern New Mexico, USA, in the High Plains, 27 km/17 mi west of the Texas border and 27 km/17 mi southwest of Clovis; population (1990) 10,700. Surrounded by irrigated farms and ranches, it is a market centre for producers of peanuts, sweet potatoes, and other agricultural goods. Educational foundations include Eastern New Mexico University (1927). The original settlement was established in 1903.
