Portarlington

Market town in County Offaly, Republic of Ireland; population (2002) 4,900. It is situated on the River Barrow, 64 km/40 mi southwest of Dublin. Portarlington power station was the first peat-fired electricity-generating station to be built in Ireland. The town was founded in the 17th century by Henry Bennett (Lord Arlington), and was settled by a group of Huguenot refugees.

There are a number of fine 18th- and 19th-century houses in Portarlington. The ruins of the Castle of Lea, a former stronghold of the Fitzgeralds, are 3 km/2 mi east.
