Porter, (William) Quincy

Porter, (William) Quincy (1897-1966)

US composer. He studied at Yale University and School of Music with Horatio Parker and D S Smith, later with Ernest Bloch and with Vincent d'Indy in Paris. He taught extensively; at the Cleveland Institute of Music for two periods during 1922-32, at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, 1932-38, and at the New England Conservatory in Boston from 1938. He also played viola in various string quartets.

Orchestral

incidental music for Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra (1934) and T S Eliot's Sweeney Agonistes (1933); the symphony Poem and Dance for orchestra; Ukrainian Suite for strings (1925); Dance in Three Time for chamber orchestra (1937); viola concerto, harpsichord concerto (1959), concerto for two pianos.

Chamber

three Greek Mimes for voices, string quartet, and percussion; nine string quartets (1923-58); two violin and piano sonatas, suite for viola solo.
