Porter, Andrew (1928- )

English music critic and scholar. He is noted for his research on Verdi and has prepared for performance much material for Don Carlos which Verdi discarded at the first production in 1867. He also worked on several translations of Verdi's libretti. His translation of Wagner's Ring was heard at the Coliseum, London, in 1973, and his version of the Parsifal libretto was also given there in 1986. He has been a critic for the Observer since 1992.

He studied at Oxford University and worked for various newspapers and journals from 1949, editing the Musical Times 1960-67. Five volumes of his criticism were published 1974-91.
