Porterville

Town in Tulare County, south-central California, USA; population (1990) 29,600. It is located to the north of Bakersfield, 65 mi/105 km southeast of Fresno, on the Tule River, in the San Joaquin Valley. Oranges and other fruit are shipped from the town, which also produces olive oil; granite and marble are quarried in the area.

Founded in 1859 on the Los Angeles–San Francisco stage route, Porterville is home to Porterville College (1927) and serves as the headquarters of the Sequoia National Forest. The Tule River Indian Reservation lies to the east of the town; population (1990) 800.
