Porto-NovoPort and capital of Benin, on Porto-Novo lagoon; population (2002) 223,600. It trades in palm oil, palm kernels, and cotton. A former Portuguese centre for the slave and tobacco trade with Brazil, it became a French protectorate in 1863. The National Museum of Ethnography is here. Although Porto-Novo is the official capital, most political and commercial activity in Benin takes place in Cotonou. Porto-Novo is linked by railway and road with Cotonou and other parts of Benin, and with Lagos in Nigeria by road and internal waterway. How to thank TFD for its existence?
