Porto-Novo

Port and capital of Benin, on Porto-Novo lagoon; population (2002) 223,600. It trades in palm oil, palm kernels, and cotton. A former Portuguese centre for the slave and tobacco trade with Brazil, it became a French protectorate in 1863. The National Museum of Ethnography is here.

Although Porto-Novo is the official capital, most political and commercial activity in Benin takes place in Cotonou. Porto-Novo is linked by railway and road with Cotonou and other parts of Benin, and with Lagos in Nigeria by road and internal waterway.
